Air conditioning can be a year-round necessity to live and work comfortably in the balmy Florida climate. When your air conditioning system is running smoothly, your indoor climate stays cool and comfortable.

Air Conditioning It isn’t just for comfort

Air conditioning is key to maintaining a comfortable indoor environment, and when it’s operating properly, you may not think about what would happen without it. Always make certain that the levels on your AC unit are checked on a regular basis. US Air Conditioning & Heating has an excellent Preventive Maintenance Agreement to keep your system running at an optimal level.

Refrigerant is Called Freon & is used in HVAC systems

Freon is a name for chemicals that are utilized as a coolant in air conditioning or HVAC systems. Refrigerant is a gas when it’s warm, but turns into a liquid when it’s cooled. Using a closed loop system in your AC system, it is recycled through your system. Heat is dissipated from the system to allow the cooling process, which then is blown back into the home.

Types of Coolants

Some of the types of coolants, or refrigerants, are categorized by the chemical components in addition to their ability to deplete the ozone layer. R-22 is typically used in older and legacy units and are called CFC’s or Chloro Fluoro Carbons. It’s not secret that these chemicals pose a threat to the ozone layer. The ozone layer is there to protect us from excessive Ultra Violet exposure. On the other hand, there is R-410A. This chemical is in newer air conditioning units and it’s damage to ozone layer is minimal. There are a couple other types of refrigerants, but the aforementioned coolants are the most used in AC units. In the spirit of protecting the ozone layer, new refrigerants are being made now that are safe to humans and the environment.

Dangers of Freon Leakage

Contrary to popular lines of thought, freon is not a carcinogen, mutagen, nor will it cause damage to the liver. However, if you inhale freon it may cause dizziness as it displaces oxygen and can cause suffocation. High doses of freon in the human body has been known to cause palpitations and irregular heart beats. If you have any questions or concerns about what types of refrigerants that we use, please feel free to give us a call.

Air Conditioning Electrical Components & Controls

In order for an HVAC unit to work properly, four things must be controlled: temperature, humidity, pressure, and ventilation.

The Control System, in some cases is known as the brains of your air conditioning unit, is the most important component of any AC unit. Every control system, from the most simple to the most complex, has 4 elements:

Sensor – measures and monitors variables (temperature, humidity, pressure, and ventilation)

Controller – receives information from the sensor.

Controlled device – receives a signal from the controller.

Energy source – power supply needed for the control system to run.

The aforementioned components are required for a control system to function correctly. Without them, your ac unit system could lose power, suffer voltage fluctuations, cause faulty startups with the thermostat, have a reduced blower fan speed, and many other issues. As professional HVAC technicians, we know how to properly wire or rewire systems in residential homes and commercial buildings. If the installation of the control system is not installed correctly, the entire AC system can become unstable and overheat. Make certain that wires are not dangling loose and unconnected. Lastly, the technician will check to see if the unit needs a coil cleaning. If the wires are chewed up, sliced, or torn off, please call us today and we will waive the service call fee with the repair.

Air Conditioning Condenser Fan

What is an Air Conditioner Condenser?

AC condensers are devices that conduct heat transfer. The heat transfer is accomplished by transforming vapor refrigerant into liquid. AC condenser units are categorized according to how the condenser rejects the heat in relation to the surrounding air. Types of AC Condensers include:

  • Air-Cooled Condensers
  • Geothermal Heat Pumps
  • Water-Cooled Condensers
  • Evaporative Condensers
  • Air Cooled Condenser

Typically, these are the most common types of condensers. They are usually present in residential and commercial units. Air-Cooled Condensers utilize the outdoor air to dissipate the heat that is taken in by the indoor AC unit. The condenser fan blade, fan motor, and the condenser coil all work synergistically together to dispose of the heat.

Geothermal Heat Pumps

Geothermal Heat Pumps, or condensers, use a slightly different method to discard the heat. They take the heat and transfer either to or from the ground as the name would indicate. This unique design takes complete advantage of the ground temperature and creates a geo-solar system. Although it’s called geothermal, the heat does not come directly from the earth but moreover, from the sun. Consequently, the heat is collected from the earth’s surface.

Water Cooled Condenser

The Water Cooled Condensers dispense the heat by way of water. The H2o in these condensers is chemically altered to prevent corrosion, which also keeps it clean while maintaining an ideal temperature. Although water cooled condensers require frequent maintenance, they are more efficient than the normal air cooled condenser, and they can operate at lower temperatures.
